Special Classical Guitar Recital

Born in New York City and raised in Seoul, Korea, Kevin Choi (CC ’17) first picked up the guitar at twelve. He played in the Korea Guitar Ensemble before moving to Boston, where he participated in New England Conservatory’s Boston GuitarFest. From there, he maintained connection with Adam Levin, a student of Eliot Fisk, with whom he studied for another year. A mathematics and music double major, he enjoys performing on campus and is always looking forward to new opportunities and experiences.

Initially drawn to the classical guitar by the recordings of Andrés Segovia, Javier Llaca (CC ’16) began his musical studies at the age of eleven. He was born in Mexico City and currently lives in New York City, where he attends Columbia University as a computer science and music double major. A student of Jorge Caballero, Javier has earned top prizes at national classical guitar competitions in Mexico, including the prestigious competition in Paracho, Michoacán.

The Columbia Guitar Duo was established in 2014 and is currently coached by maestros Arthur Kampela and Marco Cappelli. They have recently been invited to perform at Harvard University, Carnegie Hall, and WKCR New York. Incorporating a wide range of works in their programs, their broader goal is to further the presence of the classical guitar in modern concert settings.
