An Ivy Invitation – IRAN: The Untold Story, Luncheon with Cyrus Copeland
At the Cornell Club.
In 1979, Max Copeland was the first American to be arrested and tried for espionage in the Islamic Republic of Iran. His Iranian Shahin wife became the country’s first female attorney, so she could defend him before the revolutionary tribunals. Decades later, their son Cyrus set out to discover the truth: Had his father really been a CIA agent––or an unfortunate man in the wrong time and place? With his book Off The Radar, Copeland steps out to share his story, with some keen observations on our relationship with Iran, multiculturalism, and how to move forward after decades of mistrust between ‘The Great Satan’ and ‘The Axis of Evil’.
The son of an American father and Iranian mother, Cyrus M. Copeland moved to Iran with his family at age 10, where the Copelands established residence in Shiraz. After the 1979 revolution, the family moved to Tehran, beginning the period of personal and political upheaval about which Cyrus would write about thirty-five years later in Off The Radar.
Upon returning stateside in 1980, Copeland attended Haverford College and Villanova University, then went on to earn his MBA from Cornell––launching a career on Madison Avenue that would span more than a decade. Copeland has traveled coast to coast sharing his own experiences, stories, and perceptions of Iran. He has appeared on NPR, BBC, Voice of America and has written about his experiences for The New York Times, The Boston Globe, Slate, and the Huffington Post.
