Archaeologist C. Brian Rose (GSAS ’87): Discoveries of the Classical Ancient World

C. Brian Rose is a prominent archaeologist, scholar, speaker and author. He is Professor of Archaeology at the University of Pennsylvania and  Curator-in-Charge of the Mediterranean Section of the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Penn Museum).  Since 1988 he has been Head of Post-Bronze Age excavations at Troy in northwestern Turkey.  His book, The Archaeology of Greek and Roman Troy, provides an overview of all excavations from the nineteenth century. He has recently completed the final publication of the architecture and decoration of the Roman houses at Troy. He is also co-director of the Gordion Excavation Project in central Turkey where Midas was the most famous ruler of the kingdom and dramatic new discoveries have been made. He edited The Archaeology of Phrygian Gordion, Royal City of Midas.

Professor Rose served as President of the Archaeological Institute of America and is a Trustee of the American Academy in Rome. He has appeared on PBS, The Discovery Channel, The History Channel,  National Geographic, CNN and is featured in many journals and magazines.  A fascinating evening awaits as this esteemed archaeologist brings the wonders of the ancient world to life through his firsthand experience and touches on its modern woes that include the effects of war, art looting and property ownership.

He received his B.A. from Haverford College and his M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History and Archaeology from Columbia University in 1987.
